Overview:
The East Texas STEM Center is located within the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Tyler. The partnership is established upon an innovative center model built to confront the challenge of maintaining America’s competitive edge in the work economy in the area of engineering. The center builds on current models and initiatives and focus on creating and implementing research-based solutions to transform STEM education and address the unique challenges faced by Rural East Texas communities which are characterized by midsize cities, large towns and rural communities. The ETSC focuses on developing models to serve schools in these types of communities and increase participation in STEM from underrepresented groups. Schools in rural East Texas face unique challenges for improving STEM education including lack of access, infrastructure, opportunities, expertise, and resources. Serving a large rural area is a challenge that can be overcome utilizing a center model that is distributed and accessible via the web, at multiple sites, and utilizing distance education technologies. The center will serve students, teachers, and school administrators in Education Service Regions 5, 6, 7, and 8.
Mission:
The mission of the East Texas STEM Center is to ultimately prepare students for rewarding STEM careers by improving the preparation of students who pursue postsecondary studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, and STEM teaching through research, professional development, and technical assistance.
